Over recent months, we have heard from families about both the benefits and challenges of screen use at home. At the same time, growing research highlights how screentime can impact children’s sleep, behaviour, wellbeing and daily routines — particularly for children with additional needs.
In response to parental feedback and this wider research evidence, our school is launching a project to support families in understanding and shaping how screens are used with their children. Our aim is not to judge or set one‑size‑fits‑all rules, but to work alongside families to better understand what screens currently help with (such as calming, communication, fun or routines) and where support or alternatives may be helpful.
We are starting the project by launching a parent/carer survey that helps us build a baseline picture of how screens are used at home — including what devices are used, when, how long for, and why. These responses will help us tailor guidance, resources and support that genuinely meet the needs of our children and families.
